Additionally, we are equipped with a special type of sound system for use by people with hearing aids called a Hearing Loop
Question: I’ve always wanted to be on stage. Can I audition and what should I expect?
Answer: Yes! You can audition. We love new people, and we are completely volunteer organization, so we are always looking for new talent. Auditions are posted prior to each production. We post them here on our website as well as on social media pages.
Auditions vary depending on the director, but typically you will arrive at the theatre on the scheduled audition date, fill out an audition form, have your picture taken, and cold read excerpts from the script with other people auditioning. Audition cards are available to fill out in advance on the forms page.
Musicals also require anyone auditioning to sing at least 16 bars of a prepared song (accompaniment may be available and a capella is allowed as well), and usually some movement exercise/dance/choreography will be taught (wear comfortable clothes and closed toed shoes). If monologues or other requirements are necessary, they will be announced on the audition notice.
Question: Why a log cabin?
Answer: The Hut (as we call her) was built in 1934 as part of the WPA work project. It was originally built as the American Legion Post, and hosted Smithfield High School dances and other community events until the 1970s. The Town of Smithfield purchased the building when the American Legion no longer needed the cabin. Neuse Little Theatre performed their first production in the building in 1988, and in the mid-90s the Hut became the permanent home of NLT. Thanks to the generosity of the Town of Smithfield.
Question: What is there to do in town while I’m here?
Answer: There are lots of things to do in Smithfield if you want to spend the day/weekend. We recommend visiting Downtown Smithfield Development and the Johnston County Visitor’s Bureau for ideas and information about events and local spots. We have shopping, museums, restaurants, movie theaters and the greenway. Lots to do and see in the area. Come spend some time with us!
Question: I want to have an event at the amphitheater stage. How do I rent/reserve the River Stage?
Answer: The Neuse River Amphitheater stage is part of Smithfield Parks and Recreation, and they keep the calendar for availability and control cost of use. Their contact information is on their website,
call (919) 934-2148 or visit Smithfield Recreation and Aquatic Center in person.
Question: Your building is perfect for the event I want to hold. How do I rent/reserve the Hut?
Answer: It is very rare that we have the availability to rent our stage. We are almost always either actively in rehearsal or performances. When we are not, we are usually building set or in the middle of getting ready for our next performance. You can email us, or phone (919) 934-1873 to inquire about dates that would be free. Be aware, our space has a permanent stage and seating, so it is not really a good space for dancing, receptions, or mingling. We recommend going to our photos page of the building to see what the inside looks like.
