Set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. The eager new assistant, Annelle assists the outspoken, wisecracking Truvy dispensing shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby, is about to get married. The play moves forward over years, and we see all the ladies’ lives change with new experiences and tragedy. The women are affected but draw on the underlying strength—and love.
